Episode 5: My Shazam Tracks

Lemongrass and Ginger Infusions. Elvis what?

Nearest thing I’ve gotten to a red is Eric Cantona.

No cigarettes, plenty of NFL.

Off the chips, jacket potato are the future, I’ve tasted it.

Hey hey, sorry about the delay. I’ve been actually having to work for a living, shocking!! Anyhoo onto the blog, you don’t need to hear about my trials and tribulations, black holes or revelations.

So Shazam, isn’t it a wonderful thing. Whether it’s hearing a song new or old you really like, or hearing a song and not remembering the name. Then hitting the old S on the screen and waiting for it to stop spinning. And when it tells you man, you’re like, of course, d’oh! I’m a big fan of hearing a great track and thinking, I haven’t heard that in a while. I’ll Shazam that. And then taking a screen shot and thinking I’ll play that later. Anyone else do that? Just me? Try it, it’s the future. I thought jacket potatoes were the future? Here are a few fruits of said labour, lovingly packaged up into a playlist on that other WONDERFUL music app, Spotify. And what it produces is a weird and wonderful eclectic mix of young and old tracks of many genres. Or as usual, just a bit of indie 🤣. Enjoy…

Apply Some Pressure by Maximo Park is first up. That and Girls Who Play Guitar, such great tunes. Just heard their new album is really good, cheers ChrisSkez I might have to give it a listen soonest.

Mike Posner, I Took a Pill in Ibiza. Great tune. That is a song title btw, not a confession. Just in case the drugs testers are sniffing around. ‘You don’t want to ride the bus like this…’, I’ve got to get some sports in on most blogs so please indulge me. ESPN 30 for 30 Jordan Rides the Bus. Great documentary about MJ retiring from Basketball and taking up Baseball. He wasn’t bad either. I wanna be, I wanna be like Mike!

Fact of the day: Mike P is a Bernie Sanders supporter too, what’s there not to like? And also a great opportunity to bring the Bernie Sanders meme back too!!

Posner talks about how the song presents a self reflection of him and how his fame had long since faded, how he had been left completely empty inside and unable to feel any kind of fulfilment, causing him to attempt to fill the void with rampant hedonism and material possessions. In the lyrics he talks about taking the pill to impress Avicii, who he’d hung around with and written a song together a few years before. How ironic that Avicii would then go on to commit suicide a few years later after years of struggling with his own drug and alcohol addiction. Such a shame is a massive understatement.

The Heavyweight Champion of the World. Do you know it took me ages to figure out that Camber Sands was a place, Essex somewhere I think. Who knew! Didn’t they go caravaning there on an episode of The Inbetweeners? Anyway an absolute rocking track. Trying to figure out if I’ve ever seen or been at a festival with Reverend and the Makers, I don’t think I have. Might good dit myself on that one.

Adele Rolling in the Deep. So I’m not gonna lies to you, I loves a bit of Adele I do! Not sure why I’ve dropped into a bit of Welsh there, I watched Twin Town the other night, that probably has something to do with it! A few of us went along to Sing, Dance, Crawl in San Diego a few years back, bloody great event organised by The Local, one of the excellent bars in the Gas Lamp area. Anyway it started off in the House of Blues, a bunch of us all dressed up in our neon t-shirts and Stars and Stripes shorts descended on the place and started tucking into the local brew, well it’d be rude not to hey. So they decide they’re going to thank the lady who did the lions share of the logistics, and they’re trying to call her up onto the stage, but no one can find her. Then the lights go dim, and there’s a slight pause, the spotlight pans into the middle of the crowd and there she is with a mic and starts singing, Hello…it’s me! Genius. And there started one of the messiest nights I’ve had in a long time!! A special mention should go to my man Joshy, who managed to get escorted out of The Local later that evening by the bouncers for being slightly inebriated, to then go and get changed and freshen/sober up, come back and get allowed back in, to then again be escorted out for being too drunk a second time. Excellent effort my friend!! A props to the door staff for being excellent sports about it all 🤙🏻

What’s my age again? Who doesn’t like a bit of Blink-182, or as some say Blink 1-82, who knows!! Anyway, strap on your latex gloves and turn the stereo up to 11 for that one…

The Doors People are Strange. What a great track. On the soundtrack to the Lost Boys too, back when Kiefer Sutherland was life. The Lost Boys has got to be up there as one of my favourite films growing up! And they had a massive Jim Morrison poster in the cave they hung out in. The Frog Bros too, legends!! Anyone remember Flatliners too? Right up my strasse!

Daft Punk One more Time. DP leading Kimi and Grosjean out at the Monaco GP has got to be one of my favourite GP but not the actual racing event. Such great marketing. And to do it in Monaco too, amazing!! Yeah so I started to write this episode before they had announced their retirement. I liked them, I liked their music a lot. But they haven’t exactly been prolific these last 10 years!!

She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult. Just listen to it, and enjoy. And if you happen to be out running, it’ll knock a good 30secs off your min/mile pace easy!! If you get that and AC/DC Thunderstruck b2b I’ll be honest you’re probably looking at a pb!!

LG Once. Bring back the King of rock n roll football, Eric Cantona. The man himself, what an absolute legend of a footballer for Man Utd. And from Liam the City fan too, outrageously good! If you ever see me cutting around with the collar up on my polo shirt, even now 25yrs on, it’s a nod to Eric Cantona.

Eagle-Eye Cherry Save Tonight onto Neneh Cherry and Buffalo Stance, I shazam’d one and rolled straight onto the other. Talented brother and sister pair right there! Interesting fact, when on TOTP performing Buffalo Stance, Neneh was actually 8 months pregnant with her second daughter Tyson. Great little bit of gen off Mazz_B there! And they tease me for being a spotter. She beat me in a boozy marshmallow vodka pop quiz back in the day, I took that loss bad! A bit like Kansas City losing the Super Bowl. Too soon?

Adele Skyfall, SDC thick and fast! Going through a bit of a glut of Adele atm, not sure why!! Although Skyfall is a great Bond Theme. I was going to talk about Chris Cornell (another Bond theme singer) too and Soundgarden The Day I Tried to Live but after rolling through the Avicii story I didn’t want y’all descending into doom and gloom! However, life can do that to you. And the best way I’ve found to break away from that? You’ve guessed it, music!

That means I’m going to also have to leave my REM Hyde Park gig for another time too, I’ll leave you on that little teaser and wish you adios!

And I’ve gotta be honest, I might run out of music dits If we don’t come out of lockdown soon. Music doesn’t survive on a dead planet!

Next time. Episode 6: My Shazam Tracks part 2: The best sequel since Coming to America 2.

Things to be grateful for: A beautiful pillow case my daughter sent to me so I could think about her when I go to sleep. ❤️. Thanks for organising that Mazz_B 😘

“Hello, can you hear me? I’m in California dreaming about who we used to be…when we were young and free.”
